Course Name: PHYS220 General Physics II

Course Description: 

PHYS 220 - General Physics II with Lab is the second course in the calculus-based physics sequence covering waves, sound, thermodynamics, electricity, magnetism, optics and modern physics.

Credit Hours:

4.0 The course includes 3 credit hours of theory and 1 credit hours of laboratory. Theory and Laboratory will be graded separately and student should pass both in order to pass the course.

Prerequisite Courses:  General Physics I with lab PHYS 210, Calculus, Trigonometry

Teaching Strategies/Learning Experiences:

  • Lectures are in a traditional classroom setting with use of combination
  • whiteboard for detailed development of theories, going through the motion of solving problems
  • PowerPoint presentations that facilitate enhanced content, videos and interactive questions
  • PHET simulations that help interactively visualize and verify theories presented
  • Assignments are on paper, usually due in a week. Detailed solutions are provided.
  • Regular in-class quizzes to test and refresh recent topics
  • Labs involve state-of-the-are equipment that let students gets hands-on experience in setting up experiments closely related to topics being learnt. This enables them to observe, record and verify theories learnt during lectures.
  • Guest lectures from invited speakers that help appreciate course material and give a peek into real world applications alongwith

Course Outcomes and Objectives

  • Describe the different types of oscillations and wave motion, demonstrate sound propagation theory with labs.
  • Apply the laws of kinetic theory of gases. Explain heat and work in Physics and everyday phenomena.
  • Describe electrostatics utilizing electric field calculations for continuous charge distribution, Gauss’s law, electric potential due to any charge distribution, electric energy storage with applications, electric currents and resistance. Verify electrostatics and circuits with experiments.
  • Describe magnetism and magnetic field, electromagnetic induction and transmission of power, DC and AC circuits, Maxwell's equations and electromagnetic waves.
  • Describe optics including geometric optics, interference and diffraction. Setup lens and laser experiments to verify theory.
  • Describe modern physics, with the application of particle ad wave nature, atomic structure and nuclear physics.
